Dhanush To Seek Rs 1 Cr Damages In Legal Battle Against Nayanthara-Vignesh Shivan; Calls Out Duos’ Unprofessional Behaviour

The conflict between Dhanush and Nayanthara-Vignesh Shivan first surfaced before the release of Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, her docu-series. Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, is currently pursuing a civil lawsuit seeking damages of Rs 1 crore for alleged copyright infringement. It is regarding the use of footage from their film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.

Dhanush’s Production House Seek Damages From Nayanthara

A report by Times Now states that the affidavit filed in the suit accused director Vignesh Shivan of unprofessional conduct. It claimed that he was overly focused on Nayanthara. The lawsuit argues that the couple used behind-the-scenes footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in their Netflix documentary without obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC).

The actor-filmmaker’s affidavit that alleges unprofessionalism reportedly reads, “The fourth respondent (Mr. Sivan) unnecessarily began focusing his attention only on the third respondent (Ms. Nayanthara) ignoring the other cast and crew of the movie by taking multiple re-takes of scenes which involved the third respondent in order to make sure that only she gives her best performance and not prioritizing the other actors.”

This comes after the Madras High Court did not entertain an interim injunction. They stated that the docu-drama was released on November 18 last year. The court decided to take the main suit for hearing on April 9. Live Law quoted the court, “It is common ground between the parties that the documentary has been exhibited since 18th November 2024. Without prejudice to the contentions raised in the interim application, the plaintiff is ready and willing to proceed with the suit on merits. Therefore, OA 958 of 2024 is closed without any orders.”

What Happened Between Dhanush And Nayanthara-Vignesh Shivan?

Nayanthara and Vignesh met and fell in love on the set of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. They intended to include footage from the film in their docu-series. Their dispute became public on November 16 when Nayanthara wrote an open letter to Dhanush. She expressed frustration over his refusal to grant the NOC despite numerous requests. She also mentioned using footage recorded on personal devices for the documentary. While Dhanush has not publicly responded to her claims, he has initiated legal proceedings against the couple and Netflix.
