kamal haasan, kannada language remarks, thug life controversy,

A Bengaluru court has issued an injunction order preventing actor Kamal Haasan from making any remarks against Kannada. The controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan’s comment on the Kannada language persists even a month after his infamous statement. Now, a local court in Bengaluru has granted an ex parte interim injunction restraining the actor from speaking against the Kannada language.

Kamal Haasan Restrained From Making ‘Defamatory’ Remarks Against Kannada

On Friday, an Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge in Bengaluru passed the order after hearing a suit filed by Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP). It is represented by its president, Mahesh Joshi. According to PTI, the suit requested an injunction to stop Kamal Haasan from making any defamatory statements about the Kannada language and culture.

After considering the complainant’s plea, the court issued an order prohibiting Kamal Haasan from ‘posting, making, writing, or publishing any statement or remark claiming linguistic superiority over Kannada or making any statements against the Kannada language, literature, land, and culture.’

What Is The Controversy?

The court also issued a summons to Kamal Haasan and scheduled the case for further hearing on August 30. The actor is now required to appear before the court on that date. The controversy in Karnataka began following a statement made by Kamal Haasan during the promotion of his latest film, Thug Life. At the film’s music launch in Bengaluru in May, Haasan stated that “Kannada was born out of Tamil”. This remark triggered widespread outrage among pro-Kannada groups and cultural organisations. After Kamal Haasan refused to apologize and stood by his statement, the film Thug Life was not released in Karnataka.

Although the film’s producers, including Kamal Haasan, initially pursued legal action and obtained a victory, it was somewhat delayed. Ultimately, Thug Life was never released in Karnataka and did not perform well at the box office elsewhere.

About Thug Life

The film marked Kamal Haasan’s reunion with Mani Ratnam after 37 years. However, it failed to garner much praise from critics or audiences. The film features stars like Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami and Ashok Selvan. Also starring were Joju George, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ali Fazal, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, and Tanikella Bharani. Thug Life grossed just Rs 93 crore worldwide and is now streaming on Netflix.
