Madras HC Send Rs 5 Cr Notice To Nayanthara’s Documentary Producers For Using Chandramukhi Footage

Following Dhanush’s lawsuit against Nayanthara and the documentary’s producers, the creators of the 2005 hit film ‘Chandramukhi’ have now taken legal action. They allege that footage from their film was used in the documentary without obtaining proper permission. According to reports from LiveLaw, the Madras High Court issued a legal notice to Netflix and Tarc Studio LLP on Tuesday, July 8, in response to these claims.

The notices were issued after AP International, the rights holder of ‘Chandramukhi’ from the original producers Sivaji Productions, filed a plea. AP International holds the audio and video rights to the film. This excludes certain audio cassette and CD rights in some countries. They contend that the documentary makers and Netflix used footage from ‘Chandramukhi’ without prior approval or licensing. They alleged sourcing clips from YouTube instead.

The company has sent a cease and desist letter and is demanding Rs 5 crore in damages. They also claim that the producers only approached them to acquire rights after the footage had already been used. Currently, AP International is seeking a permanent injunction to prevent further use of ‘Chandramukhi’ footage in the documentary. Also, it is demanding the removal of all such clips from Netflix.
