Paatal Lok 2 Actor, Indian Idol 3 Winner Prashant Tamang Passes Away At 43

Singer and actor Prashant Tamang, who rose to fame after winning the third season of Indian Idol, passed away on Sunday at his residence in New Delhi. He was 43 years old and succumbed to a stroke. Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, Tamang lost his father early in life. He later joined the Kolkata Police as a constable and nurtured his passion for music through the police orchestra during his service.

Raju Bista, Member of Parliament from Darjeeling and National Spokesperson of the BJP, expressed his grief, saying, “The untimely loss of Prashant Tamang, a beloved singer and actor, has left the Gorkha community, along with the entire arts and music fraternity, stunned and heartbroken.”

He praised Tamang’s achievements, noting that his victory in Indian Idol in 2007 made the Gorkhas of India proud and earned widespread recognition for the community. Bista also highlighted that Tamang played a significant role in popularising Nepali music and songs.

A Cultural Icon And Inspiration

During his career, Tamang succeeded in uniting and inspiring the Gorkha community across Darjeeling, the Terai, Dooars, Sikkim, Northeast India, and internationally. Raju Bista shared that when Tamang participated in Indian Idol, he was serving in the West Bengal Police Orchestra. He added, “The passing of such a talented and gifted personality at a young age is an irreparable loss to Indian music, cinema, and especially to the Gorkhali community.”

About Prashant Tamang

Tamang gained national recognition in 2007 after winning Indian Idol Season 3. His victory led to the release of his album Dhanyavad and several overseas performances, establishing him as a recognised playback and live performer. He made his film debut in the Nepali hit Gorkha Paltan in 2010 and appeared in movies such as Angalo Yo Maya Ko, Kina Maya Ma, Nishani, Pardesi, and Kina Mayama. On television, he guest-starred on Amber Dhara and played a pivotal role as Daniel Lecho in Paatal Lok Season 2.

More than his work on screen and stage, Tamang remains a symbol of unity and pride for the Gorkha community. His Indian Idol win was a defining cultural moment, bringing together Gorkhas from Darjeeling, the Terai, Dooars, Sikkim, the Northeast, and abroad, and boosting visibility and confidence within the community.
