Released in 2009, Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots – co-written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, was one of the most loved films of the year that millions of fans are guilty of watching even today. While the film – starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi as the titular characters – gears up to celebrate its 16th anniversary this month (December 24), we’ve come across an interesting report. As per a media article, the makers and cast are gearing up for a sequel.

Aamir Khan, Rajkumar Hirani Reunite For 3 Idiots Sequel

As per a recent reports, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and actor Aamir Khan – who have pressed pause on the making of the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, are planning to start working on a sequel to 3 Idiots next year. A source in the know told Pinkvilla, “The script has been locked, and the team is extremely excited for it. They feel the magic of the first film has returned, and it is as funny, as emotional, and as meaningful as the first part.”

Sharing details about the plot of the sequel, the insider stated, “The story will be a continuation, picking up nearly 15 years after the characters went their separate ways in the climax scene and reunite for a new adventure.”

This report surfaces as a time when news of Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan halting the making of Dadasaheb Phalke, as the duo wasn’t fully satisfied with the script, made the headlines. As per the source, Hirani – who had been considering a sequel to 3 Idiots for some time, found this to be the right opportunity to revisit the popular franchise. The insider added, “He dedicated time to expand the 3 Idiots sequel into a full-fledged screenplay. Hirani always had a seed of an idea for 3 Idiots 2, but he wanted it to be perfect and something that would stand up to the legacy of the original.”

The 2009 coming-of-age satirical comedy-drama starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in lead roles. It featured Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Mona Singh and Omi Vaidya in pivotal roles. The story follows the friendship of three students at an Indian engineering college and how they navigate life while while also being a satire about the intrinsic paternalism under the Indian education system.

The film loosely from Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, won several awards that year ad even emerged as one of the highest grossing films of 2009.
