Akshay Kumar responded to the criticism surrounding his 26-year age gap with co-star Wamiqa Gabbi in Bhooth Bangla. He emphasises that such pairings are not uncommon and often depend on the script. Director Priyadarshan also supported the idea of screen age. The filmmaker highlighted that the distinction between a character’s screen age and real age has been acknowledged in the industry for decades. While some actors have addressed these age gaps openly, others have faced criticism and calls for more age-appropriate roles.
Akshay Kumar On Age Gap With Bhooth Bangla Co-Star Wamiqa Gabbi
Akshay, 58, who will star alongside 32-year-old Wamiqa Gabbi in Bhooth Bangla, addressed the backlash in a conversation with News18. He said, “Toh kya hai? Humne pehle dekha nahi hai kya kabhi? (So what? Haven’t we seen this before?) It happens in Hollywood too. Sometimes, it’s just part of the script. In real life as well, many people marry partners older or younger than themselves.”
Priyadarshan also weighed in, stating, “There’s a saying from legends like MGR and NTR — that there’s a difference between chronological age and screen age. An actor’s character age on screen may not match their actual age, but audiences accept the character for what it is. When I shoot, I don’t feel there’s an issue with the pairing, and once the audience watches the film, they don’t see it either. It’s all about the characters and how they are portrayed.”
He further added, “When I work with Akshay or Tabu, I never feel there’s a problem with their age gap. And viewers also accept it because of the way the characters are presented on screen.”
Akki’s Previous Scrutiny Of Age-Gap Films
This isn’t the first time Akshay has faced scrutiny for his age difference with co-stars. Previously, he shared scenes with younger actresses like Sara Ali Khan in Atrangi Re, Radhikka Madan in Sarfira, and Manushi Chhillar in Prithviraj.
