Ashutosh Gowariker on Gauhar Jaan biopic

When it comes to making historic and period films in Bollywood, certainly there’s no one who can doubt the abilities of filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker. After helming films like ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’, there’s no doubt that Ashutosh has always been in awe of period dramas. And as there’s a trend of making biopics these days in Bollywood, recently the filmmaker also expressed his desire to make one on late legendary singer-dancer Gauhar Jaan.

The filmmaker had made his way to attend the finale of India Film Project – Season 7 where he was asked if he wishes to make any biopic. To which, he replied saying, “Recently I have acquired a book called ‘My Name Is Gauhar Jaan’ by Vikram Sampat. She is the first lady who recorded for Gramophone Company Of India. She is a great singer from a forgotten era and I think it is a lovely story. So it is quite inspiring… let’s see.” [sic] (Also Read: Ashutosh Gowariker is all praise for Hema Malini)

“Though biography always interests me, I never thought that bio-pic in our cinema would be appreciated by the audience so much. I think the change has come not just from our end, but from the audience, unless they accept our creative thoughts, we won’t be able to make films,” added the director. [sic]

Well, it would be quite interesting to see if the director moves ahead with this project and brings the tale of late Gauhar Jaan on big screen.

Ashutosh Gowariker last directed ‘Mohenjo Daro’ which starred Hrithik Roshan and debutante Pooja Hegde playing the lead roles.
