AR Rahman's Daughters Raheema, Khatija REACT To Musician's Communal Remark Controversy

Renowned composer AR Rahman recently found himself at the centre of a heated online controversy after making remarks about communal dynamics in Bollywood and the film Chhaava. AR Rahman’s daughters, Khatija and Raheema Rahman, have now publicly come to his defence, standing firmly by their father.

AR Rahman’s Daughters Come In Support Of Him Amid Communal Remark Controversy

The controversy began when Malayalam composer Kailas Menon shared an Instagram post addressing the backlash Rahman received. Kailas emphasised the importance of respecting Rahman’s right to express his views, stating, “You may disagree with him, but you cannot deny him the freedom to share his experience.” He criticised those turning disagreement into personal attacks and character assassination, condemning the hate speech that was emerging.

Kailas also defended Rahman’s legacy, reminding followers that he is “not just any voice,” but a maestro who has elevated Indian music worldwide, shaped generations, and represented Tamil culture and Indian cinema with dignity. He condemned the trolls for reducing Rahman’s honest words to a ‘victim card’ and for hiding hate behind criticism.

In support of Rahman, his daughters Khatija and Raheema took to social media. Khatija responded by commenting with emojis like claps, fire, hearts, and hundreds under Kailas’ post, and she shared his message on her Instagram stories, clearly backing his stance. Raheema also reposted Kailas’ post, showing solidarity. Rahman’s son Ameen has chosen to remain silent during the controversy.

What Did AR Rahman Say?

The controversy stems from Rahman’s recent interview with BBC Asian Network, where he was asked if he had faced prejudice in Bollywood as a Tamil composer. His response was honest and nuanced. He said he hadn’t personally experienced much discrimination, possibly because it was “concealed by God,” but he hinted that recent years might have seen power shifts, with less creative voices gaining influence. He also suggested there may be a communal aspect at play, though it wasn’t overt.

The situation escalated when Rahman criticised the film Chhaava for “cashing in on divisiveness,” a remark that some viewers misinterpreted or found offensive. In response to the backlash, Rahman issued a video statement on Sunday, reaffirming his love for India and clarifying that his comments stemmed from personal experience, not any political motive.
