Jaya Bachchan recently voiced her criticism of the paparazzi culture during a discussion at an event in Mumbai over the weekend. Her remarks sparked a social media backlash, with many users condemning her comments, with filmmaker Ashoke Pandit now commented on it.

Ashok Pandit Calls Jaya Bachchan A ‘Snobbish Elite’ After She Slams Paparazzi Culture

During the We The Women event, when asked about her relationship with the paparazzi, Jaya said, “It is strange. I am the product of the media, but my relationship with the paparazzi is zero. Who are these people? Are they trained to be representing the people of this country? You call them media? I come from media! My father was a journalist. I have tremendous respect for such people.”

She further expressed her disdain, saying, “Magar ye jo baahar drain pipe pant, gande-gande kapde pehen ke haath me mobile leke… (These men outside wearing slim pants and dirty clothes with mobiles in their hands)… they think that just because they have a mobile they can take your picture, and say what they want? And the kind of comments they pass? What kind of people are these? Kaha se aatey he? Kis tarah ke education he? Kya background he? (Where do they come from? What is their education? What is their background?) Will they represent us? Just because they can go through social media?”

Her comments did not sit well with many, and social media users criticized her for being insensitive. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, who is president of the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association, also spoke out against her remarks. He took to Instagram, calling her comments “not very parliamentarian, #JayaBachchan ji,” and criticized what he called her “snobbish elitism.”

In his post, Ashoke emphasised that while it’s understandable to criticise the aggressive coverage by some paparazzi, to demean the entire profession with classist remarks is inappropriate for someone of her stature and a parliamentarian. He pointed out that paparazzi are hardworking professionals who often operate at the behest of stars and their PR teams. He urged her to reflect inward rather than indulge in what he called “misplaced outrage.”

Over the years, Jaya Bachchan has frequently expressed her discomfort with paparazzi capturing her at public events. She has publicly called out and reprimanded them multiple times, making her feelings about the intrusive coverage clear.
