Veteran actor Deb Mukherjee, father of filmmaker Ayan Mukerji, has passed away at the age of 83. His death, confirmed by a spokesperson, occurred on Friday morning and was attributed to age-related health issues. A prominent member of the renowned Samarth-Mukherjee family, Deb Mukherjee was also the father-in-law of director Ashutosh Gowariker.

Ayan Mukerji’s Father Deb Mukherjee Passes Away At 83

His spokesperson confirmed the news to Zoom. The veteran’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, March 14, at 4 PM at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Juhu, Mumbai. Family members including Kajol, Ajay Devgn, Rani Mukerji, Tanuja, Tanissha, and Aditya Chopra are expected to attend. Friends of Ayan Mukerji, such as Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan, Sidharth Malhotra, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh, are also anticipated to be present to pay their respects.

Born in Kanpur in 1941, Deb Mukherjee hailed from a prestigious film family. His mother, Satidevi, was the only sister of legendary figures Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. He had two successful brothers, actor Joy Mukherjee and filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, who was married to actress Tanuja. Deb’s nieces include well-known actresses Kajol and Rani Mukerji. He was married twice, and his daughter Sunita from his first marriage is married to Ashutosh Gowariker. Ayan is his son from his second marriage.

Deb Mukherjee’s Career Journey

Deb Mukherjee began his film career with minor roles in the 1960s. He was in Tu Hi Meri Zindagi and Abhinetri. Later, he transitioned to supporting roles in movies like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander and King Uncle. His last appearance was a cameo in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey in 2009.

In addition to his acting career, Deb Mukherjee was recognized as a key figure in the North Bombay Durga Puja celebrations, which many family members including Kajol, Rani Mukerji, and Rupali Ganguly attended regularly. His filmography includes several notable Bollywood films such as Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool, Abhinetri, Do Aankhen, Baaton Baaton Mein, Kaminey, and Gudgudee.
