Bhanu Athaiya death celebs mourn

Veteran costume designer Bhanu Athaiya breathed her last on October 15. Bhanu was India’s first Academy Award winner. She had received that award for Best Costume Design for Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ that released in 1983.

Several Bollywood celebs mourned the demise of Bhanu. Aamir Khan, Renuka Shahane, Anubhav Sinha offered condolences through their social media post.

Aamir who had collaborated with Bhanu for his film ‘Lagaan’ remembered her by sharing a heartfelt post. “Bhanuji was one of those film people who beautifully combined accurate research and cinematic flair to bring to life the director’s vision. You will be missed Bhanuji. My heartfelt condolences to the family(sic)” he tweeted.

Renuka Shahane recalled her experience of working with Bhanu. “RIP Bhanu Athaiya. What an amazing, committed Costume designer she was. Winner of an Oscar award, the pride of our country, yet so very humble. I had the great privilege of working with her in the Marathi film ” Katha Don Ganpatravanchi”(sic)”

“Rest in Power Bhanu. It was a privilege working with you,” tweeted Anubhav Sinha.

Boney Kapoor also expressed how blessed he was to get an opportunity to work with her. “Bhanu Athiya was the First Indian to win an Oscar in 1983. Her achievements brought glory to Indian cinema and Pride to the entire Country. Was blessed to have her for our film #Prem. She will always be an inspiration to all costume designers n stylists. #RIPBhanuAthiya.”

Resul Pookutty wrote, “India’s first Oscar winner #bhanuathaiya is no more. You been a guiding light, when nobody even heard of the Oscars you won it for us, you been an inspiration … May your soul Rest In Peace… It’s a huge loss for me personally and @TheAcademy#RIPBhanuAthaiya”

Speaking to Times of India, Bhanu’s daughter Radhika shared that her mother passed away in her sleep on October 15. The veteran designer was apparently suffering from pneumonia and she had slight fever and cough.

Bhanu has popular films like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Swades’ ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Ek Duuje Ke Liye’,‘Guide’,  ‘Razia Sultan’, ‘Agneepath’,‘Kagaz Ke Phool’, ‘Waqt’, ‘Raat Aur Din’,  ‘Teesri Manzil’, ‘Johny Mera Naam’ and ‘Karz’ and several others to her credit.
