The Supreme Court of India decriminalised homosexuality with its landmark judgement that came out last year. Post the judgement, the Hindi film industry has taken the initiative to bring on celluloid the untold stories of the LGBTQ community who have never been properly represented in Hindi films so far.

Slowly and slowly, more B-town actors have become vocal on this subject which was once considered to be taboo. Recently, ‘Padmaavat’ actress Deepika Padukone too shared her views on legalizing same-sex marriages in India.

Last Sunday, the leggy beauty participated in a special conversation with designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Imran Ahmed of The Business of Fashion. According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, during the interaction, expressing her views on whether same-sex marriages should be legalized in India, Deepika said, “It feels strange to me that we even have to ask that question and the fact that we need to address it. We should not even allow ourselves to even be in this place where somebody else dictates how and with whom you want to spend the rest of your lives with.”

We completely agree with Deepika’s views and hope that the industry becomes more inclusive. And hope that this small but important initiative taken by the industry helps in creating more awareness.

We also hope that more A-listers should come forward and lend their support to the LGBTQ community. After the decriminalisation of homosexuality, we saw Sonam Kapoor playing a lesbian in Shelly Chopra Dhar’s ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga‘.

Now, Ayushmann Khurrana is all set to star in a gay love story ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’. While Sonam’s film didn’t succeed in creating a huge impact, let’s hope that Ayushmann’s film becomes a pathbreaking one.
