The 79th edition of the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) 2026 moved audiences on Sunday night as it paid tribute to the legendary Dharmendra during its In Memoriam segment. The Indian actor, who passed away in November last year, was honoured among global cinema icons in a heartfelt tribute celebrating his enduring legacy. The awards ceremony took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Dharmendra Honoured At BAFTA 2026 With An Emotional Tribute
Accompanying the tribute was an emotional musical performance and a video montage honouring the film industry’s departed over the past year. The segment remembered icons such as Diane Keaton, Terence Stamp, Catherine O’Hara, Rob Reiner, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Tom Stoppard, Brigitte Bardot, Lalo Schifrin, Michael Madsen, and Val Kilmer. Dharmendra’s name was also highlighted in the tribute. Jessie Ware took the stage to deliver a soulful rendition of Barbra Streisand’s The Way We Were, paying homage to those who left us in the last year.

Dharmendra Passes Away At 89
Dharmendra died on November 24 last year at his Mumbai residence. He was 89. Earlier that month, he was discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after a health scare and was recovering at home. He was cremated in Mumbai on November 25. Dharmendra is survived by his two wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, as well as six children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Esha Deol.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dharmendra starred in some of Bollywood’s biggest hits, such as Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, Sholay, and Yaadon Ki Baraat. Known for his versatility, he excelled in both romantic and action roles, earning the nickname ‘He Man of India’. He collaborated with his sons in the Yamla Pagla Deewana series and Apne. His most recent appearance was in Ikkis, released in January. Posthumously, Dharmendra was awarded the prestigious Padma Vibhushan.
