EXCLUSIVE: Dia Mirza Recalls Being Questioned On Playing Side-Role In Parineeta; Reasons, “It Was Launching Vidya Balan, She’s Extraordinary”

Dia Mirza opened up about her approach to choosing roles, reflecting on the difference between commercial cinema and character-driven stories. Recalling being inspired by Konkona Sen Sharma’s performance in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, the actress revealed she always valued well-written and meaningful characters over screen space. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, she also revisited her decision to be part of Parineeta. Dia Mirza Recalls Being Questioned On Playing Side-Role In Parineeta

When asked about how character-driven roles and commercial roles are differently viewed by the audience, Dia Mirza said, “I feel individuals redefine themselves, right? I remember one of the performances that I was deeply inspired by when I first started acting was Konkona Sen Sharma in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. Now, for me, that was like a benchmark, right? So it all depends on the individual. Agar aap ek bahut hi mainstream commercial film ko dekh rahe ho and you feel ki, ‘Achha, mujhe yeh karna hai, aise banna hai,’ or you’re looking at more wholesome characters, more well-written, well-shaped stories that kind of not just inform your own truth but kind of inform more people’s truth. And you gravitate towards that, then that’s the kind of direction you choose.”

She continued, “Main 23 ya 24 ki thi jab maine Parineeta ki. Yes. Aur maine tab tak, matlab, leading parts hi kiye the. Aur Parineeta was launching Vidya Balan. It was her launching vehicle, right? It was the story that was going to bring her into people’s consciousness, and Pradeep Sarkar was directing it.”

Concluding the actress shared, “And a lot of people, when I signed that film, said, ‘Why? Why are you working on a film that is going to be launching another woman?’ And I said, ‘Because she is extraordinary. And because I want to work with these filmmakers. I want to work with women of stature. And I want to work with Pradeep Sarkar. I love the character that I have been offered.’ Because I’d rather play smaller parts in better films than play big parts in terrible films.”
