Actor Dia Mirza is one of the environmentalists who is often seen advocating for cleaner air. Considering the air is severely polluted in certain cities, Dia ensures to share the statistics and numbers of the climate change on her social media handle. However, Dia who embraced motherhood by welcoming a baby boy Avyaan Azaad Rekhi on May 14 this year recently shared her ordeal on how this climate change has affected her pregnancy and how parents need to take action immediately. While talking to the Quint, the Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein actress revealed that throughout her pregnancy, she smoked as she and her newborn were breathing polluted air.

Sharing her ordeal with the portal, she said, “My own pregnancy was complicated by a bacterial infection and my extremely prematurely born baby stayed away from me in a Neonatal ICU for months from birth. I do not know what caused the infection, but I know that many millions of mothers worldwide, with far less privilege than I have, routinely suffer from complications during their pregnancy because of the toxic environments we live in.

Dia even raises some serious questions and asks all the expectant parents how will they feel to know that air pollution particles have been found on the fetal side of the placentas or that unborn babies are exposed to the dirty air produced by motor traffic and fossil fuel burning. She said, “Our children are born into a world in crisis. The IPCC report, the most comprehensive study to date, says it is ‘code red for humanity‘”.

My baby is now a part of a planet where temperatures are rising by the day, heatwaves and other extreme weather events arrive unexpectedly, and with more intensity. Avyaan was born into a world where water, soil and air can all be poisonous,” she continued.

Mirza also asks the parents to join forces in demanding governments and big corporations to cut down their greenhouse gas emissions and switch to renewable and clean energy.
