Farida Jalal BREAKS SILENCE On Using ‘Gandi Galli’ In Shahid Kapoor’s O Romeo; Says, “If You Accept A Role…”

Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming movie O Romeo has generated buzz with its intriguing teaser, which features Farida Jalal. In the clip, Farida casually uses a cuss word, sparking a strong reaction online. Addressing the controversy, Farida shared in an interview that she had initially refused to use “gandi gaaliyan” (filthy swear words) during her first meeting with Vishal Bhardwaj.

Farida revealed that Vishal Bhardwaj has long been one of her favourite directors, and with O Romeo, she has fulfilled another dream after previously working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Heeramandi. She recounted that when Vishal visited her home, she told him she considered it a milestone to work with him. He then asked her, “Aap gaali dengi na?” (“Will you use cuss words?”)

Her response was candid: “Can you imagine? I was so overwhelmed that he was there, and I was about to work with him. I told him, ‘Nahi rehne dijiye, chhod dijiye – I wasn’t planning to say it like that.’ This man, with whom I always wanted to work, sat right across from me. I simply said, ‘Nangi nangi, gandi gandi gaaliyan main nahin dungi. Chhoti wali, mamuli-si ho toh de sakti hu’ (I won’t use explicit, filthy abuses. If it’s a mild one, I can say that). In my opinion, it wasn’t overly explicit or dirty. I won’t use cuss words involving mother or sister.” Vishal laughed and understood her point.

She added, “I’ve only said this once in the film, and look at the uproar. The comments on social media are about how Farida Jalal said this, how our beloved Dadi/Maa said this. People have known me since childhood and I’ve always stayed away from such dialogues, but it’s okay. It’s part of the character, who is always in a temper. If you accept a role, you have to go all the way.”
