Vijay Thalapathy's Vijay Gets Huge Relief As Madras HC Approves UA Certificate

The Madras High Court directed the Censor Board to issue the certification once the necessary modifications were completed. After a tense showdown over the censor approval, the court on Friday ordered the Censor Board to grant a UA certificate for Vijay Thalapathy-led Jana Nayagan, which was promoted as his final film before fully entering politics.

Jana Nagayan Gets Relief After Madras HC Directs CBFC To Issue U/A Certificate

The court’s order came after Vijay Thalapathy-led Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled for release on January 9. The High Court criticised the Censor Board, stating, “Entertaining such complaints is a dangerous trend.” It also noted that the complaint against the film appeared to be an “afterthought.”

The film will not be sent to the CBFC review panel. The court reserved its judgment on Wednesday, January 7, and the matter was listed for hearing on the film’s scheduled release day. Following the hearing, the producers decided to postpone the release. KVN Productions filed a petition after the film failed to receive certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), despite having submitted the required documents over a month earlier. On December 19, the CBFC asked for cuts and muted dialogues.

Statement From The Makers On The Postponement

Late Wednesday night, the production team stated their X account, announcing the delay due to “unavoidable circumstances.” The statement read: “It is with a heavy heart that we inform our valued stakeholders and fans that the release of Jana Nayagan, originally scheduled for January 9, has been postponed due to circumstances beyond our control.”

They added, “We understand the excitement and anticipation surrounding this film, and this decision was not made lightly. The new release date will be announced soon. Until then, we ask for your patience and continued support. Your unwavering love and encouragement mean everything to us.”

Ticket Refunds Initiated

Following the postponement, refunds for tickets—whether purchased online or at theatres—have been initiated. Many theatre owners confirmed that online ticket holders will receive automatic refunds directly to their accounts, while customers who bought tickets in person can claim refunds at the box office.

One cinema stated: “All Friday shows of Jana Nayagan at Victory Cinema on January 9, 2026, are cancelled. Online tickets will be refunded immediately. Cash ticket refunds will be available at the theatre starting from the morning of January 8, 2026.”

Reasons For Certification Delay

According to court proceedings, CBFC members initially raised concerns over the film’s high level of violence, considering it excessive for public screening. The filmmakers were asked to make several cuts, which they reportedly did. However, at the last minute, one member raised additional objections. A significant concern involved the alleged use of a defence emblem in certain scenes, which the CBFC felt needed clarification and official approval.

The matter was referred to subject experts to assess whether the depiction violated guidelines. Another concern involved scenes with communal overtones, which could be sensitive and require modifications to prevent misinterpretation. These issues caused further delays in certification.

About Jana Nayagan

The producers submitted to the court that, after initial cuts addressing violence, they were informed on December 22, 2025, that the film would receive a U/A certificate. Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain.
