Saroj Khan, fondly known as Masterji, was a dance choreographer in Hindi cinema. She was best known for the dance form mujra and was the first woman choreographer in Bollywood. With a career spanning over forty years, she choreographed more than 3000 songs. Some of her notable works are Hawa Hawai from Mr.India, Main Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera from Nagina, Mere Haathon Mein in Chandni, Ek Do Teen in Tezaab, Tamma Tamma Loge in Thanedaar and Dhak Dhak Karne Laga in Beta. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Ahmed Khan fondly remembers the late Saroj Khan as Saroj Aunty and how she is an inspiration to upcoming choreographers.

Speaking to us exclusively, Ahmed Khan said, “I used to call Saroj Ji, Saroj aunty because she has known me since I was 11 years old. And, I have had a great experience with her. And, I miss her every year, because she was a major part of my life. I was blessed to have her in my life as my guru. And, god bless her soul, because she was nothing but she only loved work. She was all in for dancing, and that’s a big teaching for many upcoming choreographers.”

Saroj Khan was a celebrated Indian dance choreographer. She is widely respected for her contributions to the film industry. Ahmed Khan is a choreographer and director, and regards her as his mentor and maternal figure. Their relationship was close-knit. Ahmed credited Saroj Khan with launching his career in Bollywood. This comes after she recognised his talent as a child actor in Mr. India.

He often referred to her as a guiding force and maternal presence in his life within the industry. In tribute to her influence, Khan recreated the legendary song Ek Do Teen in his film Baaghi 2, honoring her legacy. Their bond remained strong. Ahmed described it as a mother-son relationship.
