Filmmaker Shyam Benegal dies at 90; Padma Bhushan recipient’s daughter confirms the news

Filmmaker Shyam Benegal – who was a pioneer of the new wave film movement of the 70s, is no more. As per reports pouring in, the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan recipient – who has made films such as Ankur, Nishant, Manthan and Bhumika, passed away earlier today at age 90. Filmmaker Shyam Benegal passes away

As per reports, the renowned filmmaker passes away on Monday after days of suffering from a chronic kidney-related disease. The 90-year-old filmmaker reportedly breathed his last around 6:30 pm at the Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. Bengal’s daughter, Pia Benegal, confirmed the news of his demise to India Today.

The filmmaker celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14 with friends and family. Actors such as Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Divya Dutta, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rajit Kapur, Atul Tiwari, filmmaker-actor Kunal Kapoor were a part of the grand celebration. Sharing a picture from the celebration on her social media, Shabana wrote, “On #Shyam Benegal’s 90th birthday with my coactor of many films and my favourite actor @Naseeruddin Shah . Why aren’t more people casting us together ?!!”

Benegal – who was born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad, was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. Some of his notable works include Ankur, Manthan, Mandi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Zubeidaa and more.
