Former Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Yashpal Sharma passed away on Tuesday after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. He was 66. The news of Sharma’s untimely demise left the cricket world as well as the makers of sports drama 83 mourning.

Ranveer Singh, who plays the lead role of Kapil Dev in 83, took to his social media handle to offer condolences to the late cricketer. The actor is heartbroken at the demise of Sharma. Directed by Kabir Khan, 83 chronicles the journey of Indian cricket team who lifted the World Cup in 1983 despite being labeled as an underdog.


Expressing his sorrow over the former cricketer’s death, Ranveer took to his Instagram handle and shared a throwback picture of Yashpal Sharma. He simply captioned the picture with a broken heart emoji.


Actor Jatin Sarna, who plays Sharma’s role in 83, also shared a heartbreaking tribute for him. Sharing some pics from 83’s prep session with Sharma, Jatin wrote, This is not done sir, no not fair and god you too not fair. Yashpal sir ? can’t believe, you can not leave so soon abhi toh paari baaki thi, Abhi toh mulakaat baaki thi aapke ghar aana tha milne mujhe, Saath mai film dekhni thi aapke, aapke expression dekhne thae.. Yash paah yash paah? karke chillana tha sabne sabko pata chalna tha kon hai ye sher, sir….?@yashpalsharmacricketer you will be remembered, History will never forget you?? #83thefilm(sic).”


Ranveer Singh and other cast members of 83 also left broken heart emojis on Jatin’s post.

The makers of 83 also paid a tribute to the late cricketer. Yashpal ji, your contribution towards making the entire nation proud will always be remembered. Our deepest condolences to family and friends. Rest in peace paaji. #RIPYashpalSharma(sic),” the makers wrote. 


Sharma is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son. He had played a very important role in winning the 1983 World Cup.
