Manoj Bajpayee and Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming crime thriller, Ghooskhor Pandat, faced intense backlash on social media following its teaser release at a Netflix event in Mumbai on February 3. Many netizens found the film’s title offensive toward the Brahmin community, leading to a complaint filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the film’s release.
Netflix To Change Title Of Manoj Bajpayee’s Ghooskhor Pandat
In response, Netflix has confirmed that the film will undergo a title change. The platform’s legal representative informed the court that promotional content for the film has been taken down until the new title is finalised. As a result of Netflix’s decision, the Delhi High Court dismissed the plea to temporarily halt the film’s release, and other related lawsuits were also cleared. The new title of Ghooskhor Pandat has not yet been announced.
What Was The FIR Filed In The Delhi High Court About?
The FIR was registered on the grounds of a deliberate association of ‘Pandat’ with corruption and bribery. Advocate Vineet Jindal, representing the petitioner, sought a stay on the film’s release. He alleged that the content was communally offensive and defamatory. It could harm the dignity and reputation of the Brahmin community. The petitioner argued that the film promoted “collective defamation and hate speech,” which could threaten communal harmony and public order.
Teaser Sparks Controversy
The teaser of Ghooskhor Pandat features Manoj Bajpayee as Ajay Dikshit, an unlawful cop whose character is involved in criminal activities. The teaser hints at a plot involving a young girl that leads to a transformation in his character. While the full plot and release date remain undisclosed, the controversy over the film’s title led to significant changes.
Following the teaser’s release, social media reactions turned heated. A section of the Brahmin community expressed outrage over the use of the term Pandat, combined with Ghooskhor. It is perceived as a negative term—considering it ‘offensive’ and ‘defamatory.’ Multiple FIRs against the film and its creators have been filed across various police stations.
Manoj Bajpayee’s Response
Manoj Bajpayee, the lead actor, defended the film and clarified that the title is not intended to target any community. He also expressed concern for the sentiments of his fans and attempted to address the controversy. Bajpayee emphasised that the film does not carry any communal message.
