HIT! Junglee Pictures’ ‘Raazi’ inches closer to the 100 crore mark at the box office
After treating the audience with 2017’s sleeper hit ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’, has given yet another hit ‘Raazi’ in the first half of the year.
With every film, Junglee Pictures has ensured to deliver fresh and untapped subjects ‘Raazi’ being the lastest to their list. Apart from scripts that promise good content, they also bring together an interesting bouquet of talent, which can be seen in their past releases as well as the future ones.
Directed by Meghna Gulzar ‘Raazi’ is garnering positive reviews from all the sectors, be it the audience or the trade analyst featuring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, which opened last Friday in the theatres, made an impression on the first day, collecting Rs 7.53 crore at the domestic box-office despite it being a working day. Following this, thanks to strong word-of-mouth, the five-day collections (Friday to Tuesday) stand at Rs 45.34 crore. The weekend growth has been phenomenal and the hold during the weekdays seems to be rock-steady. It’s an enviable run at the box-office earning it the much-coveted ‘superhit’ tag. And for Junglee Pictures, it’s a jubilant hat-trick after ‘Talvar‘ and ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’. (Also Read:With 4 films lined up, 2019 is going to be Alia Bhatt’s year!)
When most films meet their decline in the collection on a Monday, ‘Raazi’ just saw a 16% decline from the first day. Devang Sampat, the India Director (strategic Initiative) for Cinepolis, asserts that strong word-of-mouth played an important role in the film’s success rather than in-your-face promotion.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta points out that for a woman-centric film which was not a part of a series to open at Rs 7 crore-plus is almost historic. “And after a great opening, it took a 50 per cent jump on Saturday and a 25 per cent escalation on Sunday which is phenomenal. These numbers show that the audience has accepted the film and Alia in a big way. After seeing the trailer, I had predicted that it will do a business of around Rs 70-75 crore, but now I think it’s going to surpass that figure. Raazi has proved that content is king and Alia the queen,” Nahta states.
The film opened well from day one in the metro cities, in nonmetro centres it grew through word-of-mouth and expects the growth in the second weekend to be at par with the first as there are no good Bollywood films coming up this Friday.
“It is interesting that the number of people watching the movie on Monday was the same as that on Friday which goes to show that the Indian film industry has matured, and the audience is appreciating content. It is no longer only about star power,” avers Devang.
Jayla is all praise for Junglee Pictures’ repertoire, pointing out that their three films experimented with various genres and were completely different from each other. “Even though being a new entrant in show business, Junglee Pictures has, from the beginning, backed content rather than proposals. It has paid off for them in a big way. They have cracked the formula. Their focus on content and conviction makes their films both commercially successful and critically acclaimed,” he states.
Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi said, “Star power can give you an initial boost but for good numbers you need content. Raazi has proved to be truly engaging and entertaining, and the film strikes a chord with the audience which is why it’s crossing borders and breaking barriers,” he signs off.
Rajender Singh Jyala, Chief Programming Officer of INOX Leisure Ltd. pointing out that positive reviews after Friday’s morning shows saw the film pick up in the afternoon and the night shows were almost full. “That is why it did so well on Saturday and Sunday and my footfalls on Monday were higher than that on Friday. Raazi has the potential of netting Rs 100 crore,” he predicts.
Has Kriti Sanon opted out of 'Womaniya'? Deets inside
Kriti Sanon has many exciting projects in her kitty due to which she has been facing a lot of date issues regarding the shoot of each film. Recently, a report suggested that the actress, who had recently signed ‘Womaniya‘ co-starring Taapsee Pannu has opted out of the project.
Now, a report in DNA has rubbished all the rumors regarding the same. The source said, “Kriti has not yet opted out of the film. It’s true that there are date issues, but the actress and her team are trying to work things out. They are constantly in touch with the producers — Phantom Films (primarily filmmaker Vikas Bahl, as he is more involved with this movie), but are yet to figure out a solution.” (Also Read:O Womaniya…How our actresses are bringing a much-needed paradigm shift)
The source added, “When Kriti and Taapsee signed the biopic, it was supposed to go on floors this April and wrap up by June. Both the actresses had given their dates, but the project failed to take off and got pushed further.”
Another source told to the daily, “The team felt it would be too hot to shoot during summer, so they postponed it further to September. Kriti had not signed anything then, but soon Housefull 4 and Panipat happened. Taapsee, too, had committed her dates from September to other films and the makers of Womaniya were finding it difficult to get both the heroines in a similar time frame.”
The source concluded, “Kriti will be free only around next April. She has already conveyed it to the makers and told them to go ahead with someone else if they have to. But Vikas and Tushar are keen on having her on board, so they are figuring out the dates and checking if they can shoot in April next year. It might get tricky again weather-wise, but that’s the only solution.”

The teaser of the film will be out on 26th June!
Earlier, debutant director Atul Manjekar had spilled the beans on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s character in the film. He told Mumbai Mirror that the film features her as an “Indian Madonna”.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had recently shot for the biggest song of her career. The song is sung bySunidhi Chauhan and has been choreographed by award-winning dancer and creative director, Frank Gatson Jr, who has worked with Beyoncé and Rihanna in the past.
He told Mirror, “Aishwarya plays a huge pop icon who’s extremely popular with the youngsters. Her character is a fabulous dancer and singer who performs on the global stage. While fleshing out her character, we began referencing a bunch of choreographers who do international live shows. Frank is among the best in the world and we decided to approach him.”
“We have kept the tone of the film real and this song too is being choreographed tastefully. I’ve been extremely lucky with my cast as none of the actors turned me down,” Atul added.
The film is produced by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Anil Kapoor, and Bhushan Kumar. ‘Fanney Khan’ will hit theaters on August 3 and it’s loosely based on the Oscar-nominated Dutch film ‘Everybody’s Famous’!
