John Abraham is all set to entertain his fans with the action packed thriller Tehran. Said to be inspired by the 2012 attacks on Israeli diplomats, the film releases on ZEE5 on August 14. While promoting the film ahead of its release, the ‘apolitical’ actor opened up about how nationalist films like Chhaava and The Kashmir Files aimed at influencing the political views of audience and the need for censorship in the country. Read on to know all he shared.
John Abraham Comments On Censorship & Political Films
During a recent conversation with India Today, John Abraham spoke about censorship and its need. While stating that censorship is important and needed, the ‘Tehran’ actor stated that how it’s managed currently isn’t ideal. He said, “We need censorship, but the way it has been overseen… it’s a bit of a question mark. They have been good with us, but I have also been responsible with the way I have made my films. I am not right or left wing. I am apolitical.”
While acknowledging that right-wing films receive immense love and work well at the box office, John stated his stance. He said, “What is worrying to me is that right-wing films find a huge audience and that’s when you ask yourself as a filmmaker what line will you toe — Am I going to take the commercial line or I’m going to stay true to what I want to say — and I have chosen the latter.”
John: I Have Never Been Tempted
When asked about whether he’s tempted to make films like Chhaava or The Kashmir Files, John made it clear he would like to stay away from them. The actor said, “I haven’t seen Chhaava, but I know that people have loved it and also The Kashmir Files. When films are being made with the intent to sway people in a hyper-political environment, such films find an audience, that is scary for me. To answer your question, no, I have never been tempted, and I will never make those kind of films.”
For the unversed, Vicky Kaushal-led historical drama Chhaava tells the story of Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, and his struggle against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The film – which explores themes of bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice, emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year with a box office earning of nearly Rs 800 crore. Meanwhile, The Kashmir Files went on to win the National Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration despite being embroiled in controversy.
