Kamal Haasan, Payal Kapadia, Ayushmann Khurrana Among 534 Artists Invited To Oscars’ Class Of 2025

Actors Kamal Haasan, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Cannes Grand Prix-winning filmmaker Payal Kapadia are among the 534 artists invited this year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The Academy, which hosts the annual Oscars awards, announced the ‘Oscars’ Class of 2025′ on Thursday night.

The Academy revealed that Kamal Haasan and Ayushmann Khurrana have been invited to join the Actors’ Branch. Haasan has been nominated for Vikram, Nayakan and Khurrana for Article 15 and Andhadhun. Payal Kapadia has been nominated for All We Imagine as Light, winner of the Cannes Grand Prix 2024; A Night of Knowing Nothing. She received an invitation from the Writers’ Branch.

“We are thrilled to invite this esteemed class of artists, technologists, and professionals to join the Academy,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang.“Through their commitment to filmmaking and the greater movie industry. These exceptionally talented individuals have made indelible contributions to our global filmmaking community,” they stated in a joint message.

Academy Selection

According to the Academy’s official website, membership in its 19 branches and one classification is granted through sponsorship, not application. “Except for Associates, candidates must be sponsored by two Academy members from the branch or category they are seeking to join. Additionally, Academy Award nominees are automatically considered for membership in the year they are nominated. And, they do not require sponsors,” the organisation explained.

The selection process for membership emphasises professional qualifications, with a continued focus on representation, inclusion, and equity. Of the 2025 invitees, 41% are women, and 45% come from underrepresented communities. 55% hail from 60 countries and territories outside the United States, the Academy added.

The invitees are 91 Oscar nominees, including 26 winners and 3 recipients of Scientific and Technical Awards, it was noted. Last year’s notable invitees included veteran actor Shabana Azmi, RRR director S.S. Rajamouli, producer Ritesh Sidhwani, cinematographer Ravi Varman, Rima Das of Village Rockstars, and Naatu Naatu choreographer Prem Rakshith.
