Filmmaker Karan Johar announced on Monday that he is taking a break from social media to undergo a week-long digital detox. Known for his candid discussions about the downsides of social platforms, Karan shared his decision via Instagram stories, revealing he will be abstaining from doomscrolling, direct messages (DMs), and posting for the duration.

Despite his high activity on social media, Karan has previously expressed concerns about its negative impact. In July 2025, he mentioned considering a digital detox after feeling overwhelmed by the constant stream of distressing updates. Sharing his own anxiety about the barrage of negative news, he asked his followers if they felt the same. He wrote, “Is everyone else getting anxious seeing only bad news on the gram??? Have seriously considered a detox!”

Before starting his digital detox, Karan’s last post featured Bollywood star Alia Bhatt in a still from a video wishing everyone a Happy Republic Day. He also used his platforms to celebrate the success of recent Bollywood releases, Dhurandhar starring Ranveer Singh and Border 2 featuring Sunny Deol.
Karan expressed his optimism about Bollywood’s resilience. He shared that the box office performance of these films indicates the industry is here to stay. He emphasized that audiences are eager to return to theaters when they connect with a film, as demonstrated by the success of Dhurandhar and Border 2.
He wrote, “The mega success of the two recent back-to-back mega Hindi film successes proves one thing… Bollywood (yes, incorrect terminology, but here to stay) is back. Naysayers can fly a kite. All Dhurandhars will cross borders of excellence when the films strike emotional chords with a paying audience (sic).”
Recently, Karan Johar also hosted a grand celebration marking Bollywood star Rani Mukerji’s 30 years in the industry. It was organized by Yash Raj Films, showcasing his ongoing engagement with the industry and his friends.
