Karan Johar Recalls Only 5 Feature Films Have Reached This Position

Speaking candidly about how far the film has come, Karan said, “We have come a long way with Homebound. When we started the film, we prayed we would get into Cannes, then we prayed we would get into Toronto, and then we prayed that our film would be an official selection for the Academy Awards.” He went on to explain the intense competition the film faced, adding, “From 92 countries, which became 86, we have finally come down to the top 15.”

Putting Homebound’s achievement into perspective, Karan highlighted its place in Indian cinema history. “In the history of the Academy Awards, there are only five feature films from India who have reached this position: Salaam Bombay, Lagaan, Chhelo Show, Mother India, and now we have Homebound,” he shared. Emphasising how close the film is to the final stage, he added, “We are very close to the final five. Whether we make it or not, I seek your prayers and your blessings.”

Turning emotional, KJo acknowledged the role of the media in supporting the film throughout its journey. “The members of the media, mainly, I have to say, you have always been so incredibly supportive of Homebound. Aapke sahare ke wajah se, aapki jo energy jo aap le aaye ho,” he said, before making a heartfelt request. “Please pray till the 22nd of January, till the final five come out. We seek your prayers. Without you, we won’t get there. Thank you for your love.”
