Karisma Kapoor’s Breakup With Abhishek Bachchan, Marriage To Sunjay Kapur Was ‘Abrupt’ Claims Suneel Darshan; Director Says, “She Wasn’t Fitting Into It”

When you are an actor, there is very little about your life that’s hidden away. Recently, filmmaker Suneel Darshan sat down for a chat with a senior journalist and got talking about many things. One of the highlight of his chat was him talking about Karisma Kapoor, her breakup with Abhishek Bachchan, her abrupt marriage to Sunjay Kapur and her life thereafter.

For the unversed, Darshan worked with Karisma on several films including Ajay, Jaanwar and Ek Rishtaa. Read on to know all he shared.

Suneel Darshan On Karisma Kapoor’s Marriage To Sunjay Kapur

During a recent chat with journalist Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Darshan opened up about Karisma Kapoor’s marriage to Sunjay Kapur and her breakup with Abhishek Bachchan. Calling both her breakup with Abhishek and her wedding to Sunjay ‘sudden’ he said, “I thought it was an abrupt decision… something had to do with the stars — not film stars — the stars.”

Believing that her marriage may have followed the emotional aftermath of her broken engagement, he added, “One didn’t know what it was… she was never seen as a couple with Sanjay before. Some things are destined to happen.”

Talking about her life post-marriage to Sunjay Kapur, Darshan stated that the actress had envisioned a homely life. He recalled, “She wanted to be a domesticated wife… She wasn’t the kind who wanted to go play golf on a Saturday. She wanted to spend time at home.” He further described Lolo as someone grounded despite her stardom. He said, “(she’s) a nice girl, a very nice girl like that… it’s very sad.”

Darshan: Karisma Became A Trophy Wife

When asked if Karisma had become a ‘trophy wife’ for Sanjay’s family, the actor didn’t mince his words. He said, “I think that was where the problem came. That’s what I heard. She was placed into a world which was not hers. Delhi has its own culture and she wasn’t fitting into it.” Despite her fame, Darshan stated Karisma was never pretentious.

During the same chat, when asked if he reached out to Karisma after Sunjay’s demise, Darshan responded with warmth and empathy. He said, “We’ve exchanged this thing… I’ve known the issue too deeply. Right from the first day, I’ve known exactly.” Recalling how Karisma was best friends with Sunjay’s sister since childhood and her tumultuous marriage, he added, “Some things just need to be buried.”

Karisma-Sunjay’s Relationship

Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor were married from 2003 to 2016 and share two kids together. Karisma’s ex-husband passed away in June 2025 while playing polo in the UK. His death was attributed to a heart attack, possibly triggered by a bee sting during the game.
