Asha Ji’s Career

She was one of the most successful, popular, and prolific singers of Indian cinema. Asha Ji – born in 1933 into the musical Mangeshkar family, began singing professionally at the age of 9. She recorded her first film song in 1943. By the ’50s, she carved a niche for herself in Bollywood and was one of the top choices of composers for the next three decades.

While initially, she was typecast into singing just cabaret numbers or dances, she’s even sung ghazals sublimely in Umrao Jaan. In 2000, Asha Bhosle Ji was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award – India’s highest award in the field of cinema. A few years later, in 2008, she was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Vibhushan. The Guinness Book of World Records acknowledged her in 2011 as the most recorded artist in music history.

May Asha Ji’s soul rest in peace.
