Ever since it’s release date and first look was unveiled, Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar became one of the most anticipated 2025. Now, with just days left until it reaches global theatres, the film seems to be courting legal trouble. As per a report, the parents of Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal awardee, Late Major Mohit Sharma, have approached the Delhi High Court seeking an urgent stay on the release of the upcoming film. Read on to know the details.
Major Mohit Sharma’s Parents Move Delhi HC, Seek Stay On Dhurandhar Release
As per a Bar and Bench report, Late Major Mohit Sharma’s parents are seeking a stay on the release of Dhurandhar. They allege that the film appears to be drawing directly from the life, covert operations and martyrdom of the decorated Special Forces officer without obtaining permission from the Indian Army or from the Major’s legal heirs.
Their petition states that a martyr ‘is not a commercial commodity.’ They asserts that no one has the right to reconstruct a soldier’s life for profit without ensuring truth, dignity and requisite approval. The family also contends that an unauthorised portrayal violates the martyr’s posthumous personality rights under Article 21 of the Constitution, along with the family’s own right to privacy and dignity.
According to the plea, the film appears to depict sensitive military tactics, infiltration strategies and operational procedures without any indication that the makers obtained clearance or script approval from the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) – the authority governing how the Indian Army is portrayed in media.
The respondents named in the petition include the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the ADGPI, the film’s director and co-producer Aditya Dhar, and producer Jio Studios.
Major Mohit Sharma’s parents have also requested the Court to halt the film’s release and mandate a private screening for Major Sharma’s family before any public premiere. They also seek a broader declaration that future films based on real-life military martyrs must obtain prior authorisation from both the Army and the martyr’s legal heirs.
Makers Clarifies Dhurandhar Is Not About Major Mohit Sharma
While this news makes the headlines, the film’s director, Aditya Dhar issued a clarification that Dhurandhar is not based on the life of Major Mohit Sharma. Dhar took to X and wrote, “Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honors his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us. Jai Hind.”
