The Met Gala 2026 has just concluded, and Karan Johar stole the spotlight in a regal look customised by Manish Malhotra. Among the many notable attendees, director-producer Karan Johar made his Met Gala debut. He donned a striking black-and-gold jacket layered with a hand-painted cape featuring Raja Ravi Varma paintings. He accessorised his look with a custom neckpiece, rings, and eyewear. Crafted by Manish Malhotra, Karan’s ensemble, dubbed Framed In Eternity. It was created over 85 days by a team of more than 80 artisans.
Raja Ravi Varma Inspired The Met Gala 2026 Look Of Karan Johar
Karan’s Met Gala outfit was designed by Manish Malhotra and styled by Eka Lakhani. The ensemble drew inspiration from Raja Ravi Varma, highlighting hand-painted details and exquisite craftsmanship. He wore a black bandhgala shirt paired with black trousers, with the centrepiece being a dramatic cape. The cape showcased intricate artwork. It includes zardozi borders, lotus motifs, swans, and pillar designs. It brings out Varma’s artistic universe to life on fabric.
KJo Pens Emotional Note
After making his debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Karan shared an emotional post. He wrote, “From loving cinema and costume as a wide-eyed dreamer to standing on the steps of THE Met Gala…life really does come full circle in the most unexpected ways. This moment wasn’t just about fashion for me. It was about storytelling.”
He explained that he aimed to take Raja Ravi Varma’s legacy “not on canvas but in motion”. Karan revealed why he chose Ravi Varma as his muse.“Ravi Varma felt right because his work does something I’ve always tried to do in cinema. He painted feelings,” he said.
Karan also expressed gratitude to the designer for giving him a “core memory”. Reflecting on his first appearance, he shared, “I didn’t want to arrive here trying to explain India. I wanted to arrive feeling like myself, and that automatically brings everything I come from with it.”
Karan Describes His Met Gala Outfit
He described the outfit as an expression of personal inheritance. Johar stated, “This is my way of wearing that inheritance. It felt like the most honest thing I could have done for my first Met — to arrive not with a concept, but with a feeling I’ve carried my whole life and finally found the right form for.”
The 2026 Met Gala was co-chaired by Beyoncé, Venus Williams, Nicole Kidman, and Anna Wintour, with Jeff and Lauren Sánchez Bezos serving as Honorary Chairs. Karan Johar’s Raja Ravi Varma-inspired look at the Met Gala 2026 truly made a statement.
