Filmmaker Nidhi Dutta, producer and writer of Border 2, daughter of acclaimed director J.P. Dutta, has shared a deeply emotional take on the personal price her father paid while making the war epic LOC: Kargil (2003). Nidhi Dutta On JP Dutta’s LOC: Kargil

Nidhi Dutta didn’t shy away from the gravity of her father’s commitment, she said, “He exhausted his personal savings to make sure that LOC was made. But along with the financial risk, his life was also at stake. He was shooting for the film in Ladakh. He has very high blood pressure.” Reflecting on the toll it took, she revealed that medical professionals were so concerned about his well-being that they warned him of serious consequences. “Later on, when the film got completed, he told us that the doctor had told him, ‘Anything can happen to you. It’s a chance you’re taking with your life.’”

She also spoke about how LOC: Kargil was not just another film for her father, but a deeply personal tribute to the soldiers who fought the 1999 conflict along the Line of Control. Nidhi also recalled very sensitive moments from the shoot, revealing that two members from the crew lost their lives while filming, saying, “We had two light men who passed away during the making, because they were drinking. They weren’t allowed to drink, they were heart patients, which they hadn’t told us at that point. They had 90% blockages.”

Discussing the obstacles behind the scenes, Nidhi also admitted that the sheer scale of the project required unmatched dedication. “It was a very stressful process,” she said, pointing to early footage, extended location shoots and a massive ensemble cast as elements that added immense pressure, yet her father never once backed down.

Even when faced with warnings and financial strain, J.P. Dutta pressed ahead with the film because he believed in its purpose. Nidhi said, “He was determined to do this for the soldiers and their families,” a sentiment that helps explain why he willingly took on such high personal risk to deliver the story with respect and gravitas.

Nidhi Dutta’s recollections bring to light the emotional and physical sacrifices behind one of Bollywood’s most ambitious war films. By admitting that her father exhausted his savings and heard warnings that his life was at risk, she underscores the profound creative passion that drove LOC: Kargil. Her reflections offer a powerful reminder that great cinema often demands not just artistic vision, but courage, conviction and heart.
