Rajpal Yadav surrendered before the Tihar Jail authorities on Thursday evening after the Delhi High Court declined to extend his deadline for surrender in connection with his 2024 conviction in cheque-bounce cases. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma ordered Yadav to surrender immediately. She sharply criticised him for failing to comply with the court’s earlier directive to surrender on February 4.
Rajpal Yadav Surrenders In Tihar Jail In Cheque Bounce Case
According to jail officials, Yadav presented himself to the Jail Superintendent around 4 pm on Thursday. This comes after he complied with the High Court’s directions. During the hearing, Yadav’s lawyer explained that the actor was unable to surrender on February 4. It was because he was attempting to arrange funds to pay the complainant and could not reach Delhi by the deadline. The lawyer requested that the court recall the surrender order to grant him more time to repay.
The High Court, however, expressed strong disapproval of Yadav’s non-compliance and rejected the plea. They noted that the surrender order was issued on February 2 in the presence of his legal counsel. It was reaffirmed on February 4. This came after his request for an extension had already been denied.
The court clarified that the order, uploaded the same evening, left “no room for confusion” regarding the surrender deadline. It emphasised that Yadav had already been granted two extra days at his request. This made it clear when he was expected to surrender.
Highlighting the importance of adhering to court orders, the court stated that the law favours obedience over contempt. They warned that continued leniency could set a dangerous precedent, suggesting that court directions can be repeatedly ignored without consequences. “This Court cannot be expected to create or show special circumstances for any individual merely because they belong to a particular background or industry,” the court remarked.
While acknowledging the court’s leniency, the High Court stressed the need for justice to be balanced with discipline, and that endless leniency is unsustainable when non-compliance persists. “In these circumstances, this Court finds no merit in the plea of the counsel for the petitioner to recall its order directing surrender of the petitioner (Rajpal Yadav) before the Jail Superintendent, Tihar. He is ordered to surrender immediately today,” the court declared.
