Rajpal Yadav Cheque Bounce Case

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav is once again in the spotlight, not for a film, but for a long-running legal battle. The veteran comedian-actor has been embroiled in a cheque bounce case involving unpaid dues worth several crores, and the Delhi High Court has now ordered him to surrender to jail authorities after rejecting his plea for more time to sort out his finances and make payments. This marks the latest development in a case that has dragged on for years and drawn sharp criticism from the court over repeated non-compliance. Read on to know all that happened.

Delhi HC Orders Rajpal Yadav To Surrender

In its latest order, Delhi High Court directed Rajpal Yadav to surrender before the concerned jail superintendent by 4 p.m. on February 4, 2026, after finding that he had failed to honour multiple court-mandated settlement commitments in the cheque bounce cases. The bench, led by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, rejected his request for more time to make payments and criticised him for routinely missing deadlines despite several opportunities given earlier.

Yadav’s lawyer had told the court that the actor had arranged ₹50 lakh to begin repaying his debts and sought at least another week to finalise the payment. However, the High Court said there was no justification to extend the deadline again, noting that the actor had been granted additional days previously on account of his commitments and assurances but had still not complied. “There is no ground for any extension,” the judge said, emphasising that Yadav had repeatedly failed to fulfil undertakings to the court in the past.

Rajpal Yadav’s Plea To Extend Deadline Declined

The order arises from a series of cheque bounce complaints under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, filed by M/S Murali Projects Pvt Ltd and others. Rajpal Yadav and his wife were convicted in these cases and originally sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, but the High Court had earlier suspended the sentence on condition that they take genuine steps toward settlement. Despite multiple extensions and opportunities over the past couple of years, Yadav failed to make the agreed payments, with the court noting that demands totalling several crores remain outstanding.

Pointing to previous commitments and fluctuating explanations, including issues with demand draft details, the High Court said it could no longer tolerate further delays or leniency. As part of the latest direction, the amount already deposited with the court was ordered to be released in favour of the complainants, and the earlier suspension of his sentence was withdrawn, requiring him to serve the sentence awarded by the trial court.

With the deadline to surrender now set and all further extensions denied, Rajpal Yadav faces the consequences of the prolonged cheque bounce dispute. The court’s firm stance underscores the importance of compliance with judicial orders, particularly in financial liability cases where repeated defaults can lead to incarceration even for well-known public figures.

What Is Rajpal Yadav’s Cheque Bounce Case?

The case against Rajpal Yadav originates from multiple complaints alleging dishonour of cheques issued to M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd and others, amounting to crores of rupees in unpaid settlement dues. After convictions in the late 2010s and a six-month sentence from the trial court, the Delhi High Court suspended the sentence in 2024 to allow time for settlement efforts. However, the actor’s continued failure to meet payment deadlines and repeated breaches of court undertakings led to the suspension being revoked and a surrender order being issued in February 2026.
