Rani Mukerji Recalls She Was Unsure About Doing Kuch Kuch Hota Hai With Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol

Rani Mukerji looked back on her early days in Bollywood and shared fond memories of working with director Karan Johar on the hit film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). In a recent interview, she praised Karan’s talent and recalled how their friendship began on that very film set.

Rani said she was impressed with Karan’s passion and clarity when he narrated the script to her. She said to ANI, “ Karan was so clear with his narration. I found Karan to be an honest and clear-headed filmmaker because the way he came and narrated the subject to me was so passionate. While he was narrating, I knew somewhere that Karan was going to make a mark in the industry because he was just so clear,”

Even though she was excited, Rani had some doubts because the film starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, a hugely popular on-screen pair after DDLJ. She asked Karan if he was sure about casting her. He replied with confidence, saying, “Leave it to me.” That became the famous line “Leave it to Tina” from the film.

Since then, Rani and Karan have worked together on several projects like Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Bombay Talkies. Rani described Karan as a “demanding” director who knows exactly what he wants from his actors and won’t stop until he gets the perfect shot. Rani played the role of Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which became one of her most iconic roles.

Rani recently won a National Award for her performance in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, where she played a mother fighting for her children in a foreign land. The film is based on a true story and also stars Anirban Bhattacharya, Neena Gupta, and Jim Sarbh.
