Actor Ranveer Singh has found himself at the centre of a legal controversy after his mimicry of the Kannada blockbuster Kantara triggered complaints alleging that he hurt religious sentiments. The issue stems from a public appearance at the IFFI where the actor reportedly mimicked and referred to a deity-associated element from the film in a manner that some viewers considered disrespectful, prompting a police complaint and legal scrutiny.
Karnataka HC Slams Ranveer Singh For Kantara Mimicry Row
As the matter escalated, Singh approached the Karnataka High Court seeking protection from coercive action. During the hearing, the court came down strongly on the actor, stressing that public figures must exercise caution because of their wide influence.
Expressing displeasure over his comments, the bench said, “You may be Ranveer Singh or anybody. You can’t be loose-tongued at all! We will see if there is mens rea.. But, you being an actor, you have influence on so many people. You have to be responsible. If you are speaking about a deity (you have to do your research), you can’t call it a ghost. You have no right to hurt anybody’s religious sentiments..You have apologised, but will your apology take back all the words? I, you, people may forget. But internet never forgets.”
Ranveer Singh Gets Interim Relief In Kantara Mimicry Row
The court underlined that celebrities carry social responsibility and cannot make careless remarks about matters tied to faith or culture. However, even while reprimanding him, the High Court granted Singh interim relief and barred the police from taking any coercive steps against him for now. It directed him to cooperate fully with the investigation as the case proceeds.
The sensitivity surrounding the controversy also ties back to the cultural significance of Kantara, directed by Rishab Shetty. The film draws heavily from coastal Karnataka’s folklore, rituals, and deity worship traditions, and many viewers regard its themes with deep reverence, a factor that intensified the backlash against Singh’s remarks.
With interim protection in place, the actor avoids immediate legal action, but the proceedings will continue as the court examines the complaint further.
