Shabana Azmi Reveals There Was No Mutual Settlement Between Javed Akhar And Kangana Ranaut In Defamation Case

Shabana Azmi has voiced her perspective on the recent settlement between Javed Akhtar and Kangana Ranaut concerning the defamation case. Just a month after the two parties reached an agreement, Shabana, Javed’s wife, expressed her thoughts, particularly regarding the media’s portrayal of the situation. Javed initially filed the defamation case against Kangana in 2020, and after lengthy deliberations, both sides came to a resolution this past February. However, Shabana criticized the media’s framing of the settlement, highlighting its description as a “mutual settlement.”

As reported by Bollywood Hungama, Shabana Azmi’s clarification that Javed Akhtar never pursued financial compensation but rather sought a written apology from Kangana Ranut . She expressed, “They had asked for no monetary compensation but for her apology in writing. The victory is his and his lawyer Jay Bhardwaj’s.”

In her critique of the media, Shabana remarked, “But I’m mystified why the press made it seem as though it was a mutual settlement but did not mention that it was the apology in writing which he was seeking and why he had fought the case for four and half years.”

Kangana Ranaut’s Official Statement

In an official report submitted to the court, Kangana stated, “The statements made by me in the interview dated July 19, 2020 and thereafter were a result of misunderstanding. I hereby unconditionally withdraw all the statements made by me….and I undertake not to repeat the same in future. I apologise for the inconvenience caused to Mr Javed Akhtar who is one of the senior most members of the film fraternity and I have highest regards for him.”

Javed, in the mediation report, noted, “In view of the statements made by Ms Kangana Ranaut, I agree to withdraw the complaint…”

Later, Kangana shared a joyful photo with Javed Akhtar taken in court, writing, “Today Javed ji and I have resolved our legal matter (defamation case) through mediation; in the mediation, Javed ji has been very kind and gracious; he also agreed to write songs for my next directorial.”

What Happened Between Kangana And Javed?

Javed accused Kangana of defaming him by dragging his name into the Sushant Singh Rajput case during one of her interviews, claiming that she made defamatory statements on both national and international platforms. In response, Kangana had filed a counter-complaint, alleging extortion and invasion of her privacy.
