Shah Rukh Khan’s deep involvement with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the Indian Premier League team he co-owns, isn’t just a business interest; it’s a personal passion. Over the years, the actor-producer has routinely attended matches, interacted closely with players, and actively shared strategic inputs, building a reputation for being obsessed with the franchise. Speaking about this unusual combination of cinema star and sports team owner, filmmaker Karan Johar says KKR today may be more profitable than the business of any of his movies.
Karan Johar On Shah Rukh Khan’s Team KKR
KaranJohar, who frequently works with Shah Rukh in his productions under Dharma Productions, made these remarks while talking about the ‘genuine involvement’ of actors in business ventures beyond films. He said that celebrities achieve the best results when they truly invest themselves in projects outside their core profession instead of treating them as side gigs.“When somebody is genuinely involved, they’re not doing it like a pet project, and that’s one huge philosophy that someone like Shah Rukh is following. He’s not doing it for fun, he’s doing it because he’s really into it,” Karan explained.
Talking about Shah Rukh’s role with KKR, He said in this interview with Sarthak Ahuje, “Shah Rukh Khan bought a cricket team when it started decades ago. Look at the valuation today. Why is it? It is because SRK is obsessed, passionate and sincerely active about his liaison with KKR. He is not just adding presence in that stadium or giving his name to that partnership. It is because he strategises, he engages, he obsesses, he gives hours of his time to that liaison. That is why it is such a profitable venture for him and that is why it’s probably bigger than any business in movies that he is engaged with.”
Karan further pointed out that this level of involvement, beyond merely putting a name on ownership papers, is rare and adds a unique dimension to how actors can shape and influence ventures outside cinema.
Karan Johar On Consumers Engage With A Celebrity
According to Karan Johar, consumers quickly recognise whether a celebrity genuinely invests in a venture or merely lends their name for visibility. He said his first question is always about the level of involvement, adding that surface-level actions like posting videos, doing Instagram Lives, attaching one’s name, or signing paid partnerships without equity do not count as real commitment, and that true engagement with the business ultimately matters most.
His comments reflect a growing trend in Bollywood where top stars are expanding their portfolios into sports, lifestyle brands, digital content and more, but as Karan Johar suggests, true engagement often dictates success, the same way it does for Shah Rukh Khan and his IPL team KKR.
