Vijay Thalapathy’s Wife Sangeetha Sornaliam Files For Divorce; Alleges Actor Of Infidelity Amid Jana Nayagan Release Row

Actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay and chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is facing a major personal development as his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has filed a petition for divorce in the Chengalpattu Family Court. Sangeetha’s petition, filed on February 27, 2026, cites infidelity (adultery) and related issues under Sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which permit dissolution of marriage on grounds such as adultery and mental cruelty.

Sangeetha Sornaliam and Vijay Thalapathy were married in August 1999, and their 27-year marriage has produced two children, a son, Jason Sanjay, and a daughter, Divya Saasha. For years, the couple maintained a largely private personal life despite Vijay’s long and successful career in Tamil cinema and his recent political rise.

In her divorce petition, Sangeetha alleges that in April 2021 she discovered that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress, a development she says caused “deep emotional pain and mental suffering, amounting to betrayal and violation of marital trust.” The petition states that while Vijay initially assured her the relationship would end, he “continued the adulterous relationship without remorse.”

Sangeetha’s legal filing describes the marriage as having “irretrievably broken,” with efforts to resolve differences through counsel and personal discussions between September 2021 to February 2022 and again between August 2024 and February 2025, failing to result in an amicable settlement.

She has sought not only the dissolution of the marriage, but also permanent alimony commensurate with Vijay’s income and social standing, the right to reside in the matrimonial home in Neelankarai until the case is disposed of or equivalent accommodation is provided, and that the proceedings be held in camera to protect the privacy and dignity of all parties.

A hearing in the divorce proceedings is scheduled for April 20, 2026, according to court filings.

The divorce news has come at a time when Vijay Thalapathy is already under public scrutiny for multiple professional and political issues, most notably the censorship row surrounding his upcoming film Jana Nayagan, which has drawn political tensions and debate over its portrayal of contemporary issues in Tamil Nadu.
