Director Amit Rai, known for OMG 2, has confirmed that his planned historical biopic on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, starring Shahid Kapoor, has been shelved. While the exact reason hasn’t been revealed, Rai expressed his frustration with how the film industry operates.

In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Rai spoke about the challenges directors face. “The system is so cruel,” he said. “Even after making a successful film like OMG 2 that earned ₹180 crore, it’s still not enough. Directors face many hurdles—from casting and production to management. You can live with a story for five years, and then someone dismisses it in minutes with a short review.”
Due to these ongoing challenges, Rai has decided to produce his next film independently. He will be working with Hungarian cinematographer M1te Herba and action expert Isaac Hamon, known for his motion-capture work.
Rai also shared that Pankaj Tripathi, who starred in OMG 2, will be part of his new film. Akshay Kumar has also shown interest in teaming up with him again. The director praised both actors for supporting films that send meaningful messages rather than only chasing box office success.
“Some actors only want to do what sells. A few were honest with me. Many weren’t interested in stories that speak the truth about society and preferred love stories instead,” he added.
Despite facing competition from Gadar 2, OMG 2 was a box office success, thanks to strong performances by Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi.
As for Shahid Kapoor, he was last seen in Deva alongside Pooja Hegde. He is now rumoured to star in a sequel to the 2012 hit Cocktail, with Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna.
