A routine journey from Mumbai to Pune turned into a prolonged and unsettling ordeal for actor Sonali Kulkarni, after a massive traffic gridlock brought movement to a standstill on the Mumbai–Pune highway near Mankhurd. The disruption, which stretched late into the night, left hundreds of commuters stranded without clear information or relief, exposing the fragility of traffic management on one of the region’s busiest intercity routes.
Sonali Kulkarni Shares 5 Hour Traffic Jam Nightmare On Mumbai-Pune Highway
On Wednesday night, Sonali Kulkarni took to social media to document her experience after remaining stuck for more than five hours. She described the situation as chaotic and frightening, with vehicles lined up endlessly and no visible progress.
In a video recorded from the Mankhurd bridge, she stepped out of her car and captured long, unmoving queues of traffic ahead and behind her. “Hi, I am here on Mankhurd bridge. It’s been exactly five hours that we are stuck here. I am going towards Pune. You can see the traffic behind me and ahead of me. We called the traffic control team; they are saying to have patience,” she said.

Furthermore, she highlighted how the severity of the jam left commuters completely stranded. There was no room to move forward, and turning back was equally impossible. “The jam is really bad and they are not sure when it will get resolved. We can’t cross. We are completely stuck because we can’t turn back either. Pray for us. Police, if you know anything or can come from the other side and give us an update, then please do. We can’t even say we are hungry, it’s beyond that. I know people must have gone through much worse situations than us, but this is scary, five hours at just one position,” she added.
The gridlock reportedly followed a crane-related incident near the Mankhurd stretch, which disrupted traffic flow on the Mumbai–Pune highway and led to severe congestion. The situation quickly escalated, affecting hundreds of vehicles, including private cars, buses, and heavy trucks. Reports also indicated that a police constable, caught in the same traffic while returning home from duty, died during the ordeal.
Sonali Kulkarni, who made her Hindi film debut with Dil Chahta Hai, has since built a strong presence in both Hindi and Marathi cinema with films like Deool, Natrang, Doghi, Taxi No. 9211, and Singham. She has not shared any further updates since posting the video.
The incident underscores how a single disruption can paralyse a critical highway, leaving commuters vulnerable and uninformed. It also raises urgent questions about real-time communication, emergency response, and infrastructure resilience on heavily used routes like the Mumbai–Pune corridor.
