As engineer, activist, innovator Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike marks its 17th day (on Tuesday, July 14), several well known celebs from the entertainment world have taken to social media and have extended support to Sonam and the ongoing CJP Protest. Aside from Idiots actor Omi Vaidya and Zeenat Aman, many more stars have also spoken in support of Sonam and his cause. Scroll below to see who all posted and what they had to say.

Celebs Extend Support To Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike, CJP Protest

Less than 12 hours ago, Zeenat Aman took to Instagram and shared a lengthy message detailing Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike. A part of her caption read, “My thoughts today are in the country’s capital city where @wangchuksworld world is entering the 17th day of his indefinite hunger strike.” In other, she asked the government to initiate conversation, writing, “With respect to Mr. Wangchuk’s wishes, I implore the Indian government to open dialogue on this matter that concerns the future of all India.”

She added, “We must not become a society that sits back and watches one of its greatest minds be sacrificed. India has a long history of peaceful protest; those who wield power are obliged to meet such protest with peaceful dialogue.”

Abhay Deol took to Instagram and reposted Zeenat Aman’s post. While showing his support, Abhay shared a picture of Sonam Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar and attached it with a broken-heart emoji. Actress Rubina Dilaik also shared the veteran actress’ post on her Stories and wrote, “He is a Real Hero. Don’t let him Die fighting for our country’s own good”

Omi Vaidya, Atul Kulkarni, Ayesha Khan Speak Up

Omi Vaidya – known popularly for his performance as Chatur Ramalingam in 3 Idiots (a film inspired by the life of Sonam Wangchuk), shared a heartfelt video speaking about the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar and Sonam’s fast. In the clip he’s heard saying, “I don’t want Phunsukh Wangdu to die.”

Urging the public to learn more about his work and ongoing campaign, Omi continued, “I’ve met this guy. He’s a pretty interesting character. He has achieved some incredible things in his life. And he seems very humble, which is quite remarkable. I suggest you look him up. And see what he’s up to because right now he is on a very long hunger strike. It’s been many weeks, and his blood sugar has dropped significantly.”

Following Omi’s post, Dhurandhar fame Ayesha Khan took to Instagram and reshared his video. Revealing that she was totally unaware of the protest, she sought help from famous paparazzi accounts and media pages to give more coverage to the ongoing CJP protest in Delhi and voiced her concerns.

Atul Kulkarni took to X and lent support to Sonam Wangchuk and CJP’s cause. In his tweet, he urged the youth to “reshape this country with integrity and compassion.” He also wrote, “Tomorrow is an important day. I place my hope in you.” Kulkarni had previously criticised the government and opposed politics based on religion and majoritarianism.

Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah Extend Support

On Monday, a long with a group of prominent writers, actors, and academics, Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah urged the protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to end their indefinite hunger strike. While requesting that the activists and protesters stop their fact, the group reiterated their support for the protesters’ demand seeking Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over the alleged NEET exam irregularities

A part of their long letter reads, “We worry that their negligence in responding to your demands will only worsen the already fragile state of health that many of you are in.”

About The Hunger Strike

Wangchuk is on a hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. It follows the NEET-UG paper leak. This ignited a social media-driven political movement under the banner of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Tuesday also marks the 25th day since the organisation launched its protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Wangchuk and the Abhijeet Dipke-led CJP have garnered support from leaders across the political spectrum as the protest in Delhi continues. Several political figures have visited the protest site recently and expressed solidarity with the movement.
