Soni Razdan REACTS To Many Knowing Her Only As Alia Bhatt’s Mother, Mahesh Bhatt’s Wife; Says, “It’s Funny But I Just Go On”

Soni Razdan needs no introduction. The actress – who made her acting debut as Rosemary in 36 Chowringhee Lane, gained fame and accolades for her performance in Mahesh Bhatt’s 1984 drama, Saaransh. It was on this film that she fell in love with the director and the two tied the knot in 1986. However, soon after wedding the flmmakers, Razdan’s professional career pretty much came to a standstill.

During a recent chat, the actress recalled how many married female actors had to take a backseat from acting as they were expected to focus on raising a family. While addressing the sexist nature of the industry, the actress also recalled how her identity is mainly tied to her being known as Alia Bhatt’s Mother or Mahesh Bhatt’s Wife. Soni Razdan On Not Getting Work After Marriage To Mahesh Bhatt

During a recent chat with News18 Showsha, Soni Razdan got candid about Bollywood’s treatment to women actors in the last decades. The ‘Songs Of Paradise’ actress said, “I’ve grown up in this industry – in the sense that I’ve been here for so many years. There has been a huge change over the years. I find it to be an almost different world altogether. When I had started out, I was doing really well. And then suddenly I got married. I wasn’t getting any work after that.”

Recalling how Ramesh Sippy and Jyoti Sarup’s Buniyaad changed things around for her, Soni continued, “I got a feedback from somewhere that since she’s now so and so’s wife, why does she need to work? I got so angry! But then, luckily, Buniyaad happened and after that, I got to work in some really good films. But before that, I was so upset. This is what has changed today.”

Happy that Bollywood doesn’t discriminate against women actors anymore, Soni Razdan continued, “I’m so proud to know that actresses can do things their way. You can’t delay life! We were delaying our lives because we were working. What a ridiculous thing! To be an actor, a musician or a creative artiste, you’ve to live life and that’s so important. You can’t be doing that sitting in some ivory tower somewhere. It’s not possible.”

Soni: All My Life, I’m Somebody Else’s Somebody

Despite being a part of the industry for decades now and starring in acclaimed projects like Saaransh, Khamosh, Pippa and more, Soni believes her identity continues to be restricted to being known as Alia Bhatt’s mother and Mahesh’s wife. She said, “All my life, even now, I’m somebody else’s somebody. Let me be very loud and clear… My struggle is still to be known by who I am. I’m happy for the people around me, who’re doing so well in their lives. How could I not be? I’m grateful. But perhaps that’s how my journey was meant to be. Now I laugh at it. It’s funny but I just go on, thinking that it’s okay.”

Soni Razdan is the mother of two daughters, Shaheen Bhatt and Alia Bhatt, and step mother to Mahesh Bhatt’s two children from his first wife, Pooja Bhatt & Rahul Bhatt. She’s now also the grandmother to Raha Kapoor.
