With Border 2 roaring at the box office and drawing audiences back to theatres with its patriotic drama, scale and ensemble cast, the film has also kept Varun Dhawan constantly in the spotlight. From the teaser and trailer launch to the emotional track Ghar Kab Aaoge, the actor found himself facing heavy trolling online, with social media dissecting everything from his expressions to his performance.
In the success event of Border 2, the actor also recalled a deeply emotional moment from the shoot, when his father, David Dhawan, was admitted to the ICU due to a health scare. Varun immediately rushed home to be by his side, but his father insisted he return to the set and continue filming, reminding him not to let the producers’ hard work and money go to waste. Scroll on to know what the actor had to share.
Varun Dhawan On Facing Trolling With Border 2
Addressing the constant scrutiny that comes with fame, Varun Dhawan admitted that trolling has almost become routine in the industry. “Ye, pehle toh trolling sabki hoti hai. Aajkal it’s become a thing, it’s become fashion. Some people can take it in their stride, some people can’t. Toh luckily, I could take it. Maine is baat ko bahut seriously nahi liya is baat ko. I took it at face value. Mere paas meri family ka support tha.”
Varun Dhawan On Father Being In ICU During The Shoot
However, what truly tested him was not social media noise but a real-life emergency. During the film’s shoot in Babina, while they filmed the Battle of Basantar sequence, his father suffered a health scare and landed in the ICU. Sharing the emotional moment, he said, “Actually, main yeh share karna chahta hoon kyunki hum public figures hain. Jab film ki shooting chal rahi thi, specially jab hum Babina mein Battle of Basantar shoot kar rahe the, us waqt mere father ko health scare hua aur woh ICU mein admit ho gaye. Obviously, Anurag and Binoy knew about it. Main turant flight leke ghar gaya. ICU mein jaake maine dad ko dekha. Unhone mujhse kaha, ‘How can you come back? Tum wapas kaise aa gaye? Tumhari shooting chal rahi hai.’”
Despite wanting to stay back, his father urged him to return to work, “Maine kaha, ‘Kya bol rahe ho papa? Main yahin rahunga.’ Lekin unhone bola, ‘Hum log picture banate hain, logon ko entertain karte hain. Producer ka bahut paisa laga hota hai. Tum kal subah wapas jao aur apna call time meet karo.’” That moment changed his perspective entirely. “Main sirf itna kehna chahta hoon ki jab zindagi mein aise serious cheezein hoti hain, toh trolling kuch bhi nahi lagti. It does not make a difference.”
Varun Dhawan On Being Called Out For His Smile
He also addressed an old controversy linked to his early films and made it clear that he never reacted to online jokes, “Joh cheez hui thi Badrinath ki dulhaniya mein, maine hi ki thi… woh tedha-muh wala smile maine hi kiya tha. Agar koi copy kar raha hai toh theek hai, kar lo. Agar usse aapko kuch mil raha hai toh kar lo. Mujhe farq nahi pada… Ab next comedy film aa rahi hai, toh main guarantee deta hoon ki usmein main usse comedy ke liye use karunga.”
When asked again about trolling, Varun lightened the mood with humour. Laughing, he joked, “Tab to mujhe wahi lag raha tha ki film ki promotion ho rahi hai, ek tarike se.” He added cheekily, “Aapko bhi pata hai ki kitne paise dene padte hain posts kharidne ke liye, taaki aap kuch daalo to woh…” The audience erupted in cheers and applause, appreciating his candid and confident take.
Looking back, Varun made it clear that the experience reshaped his priorities. The trolling, memes and online chatter eventually faded into the background compared to bigger issues in life. With his father’s words pushing him to return to the set, the actor found renewed strength and perspective. For Varun, Border 2 isn’t just a professional milestone but a deeply personal journey, one that taught him resilience, gratitude and the importance of showing up, no matter the noise around him.
