It’s a sad day got Bollywood lovers. As per latest reports, veteran actress Kamini Kaushal is no more. The yesteryear star – who was India’s oldest living actress and a legendary figure, passed away today at the ripe age of 98 years.

Veteran actress Kamini Kaushal – who ruled the hearts of millions with her work in films like Do Bhai, Aag and Nadiya Ke Paar, has passed away 2 years shy of celebrating a century alive. Her family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Journalist Vickey Lalwani confirmed this news on of her demise on his Instagram account and quoted a source close to her family saying, “Kamini Kaushal’s family is extremely low profile, and needs privacy.”

No official cause of death has been shared, though it is believed to be due to age-related illness.

About Kamini Kaushal

Kamini Kaushal – who entered the film industry in 1946, has reportedly starred in more than 90 films in over 7-decade long illustrious career. She debuted into the world of films with Neecha Nagar, a film that went on the win the prestigious Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946.

Post that, she appeared in several notable films, including Shaheed, Nadiya Ke Paar, Shabnam, Arzoo and Biraj Bahu. Her other acclaimed titles that captivated the audience include Do Bhai, Ziddi, Shabnam, Paras, Namoona, Jhanjar, Aabroo, Bade Sarkar, Jailor, Night Club and Godaan.

Since the 1990s, Kamini has only sporadically appeared in films. Some of her notable appearances in the last couple of decades include Chennai Express in 2013, Kabir Singh in 2019 and Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022. The veteran both of which rank among the highest grossing Indian films, winning the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for the latter. She made her final film appearance with a cameo in Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022.

Kamini’s Personal Life

Kamini Kaushal was born in Lahore and is the daughter of Shiv Ram Kashyap – a professor of botany who taught at University of Punjab at Lahore, British India (present-day Pakistan). She is the youngest of two brothers and three sisters. She did her B.A. (honors) in English literature from Government College in Lahore and got an offer to act in films through Chetan Anand in 1946 with Neecha Nagar.

When her elder sister died in a car accident – leaving behind two daughters, Kaushal married her brother-in-law, BS Sood in 1948. Her elder sister’s daughters are Kumkum Somani and Kavita Sahni. Kamini had three sons after 1955, Rahul, Vidur and Shravan.

The actress’ family is yet to release an official statement.
