India has created history at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. After Anasuya Sengupta won the Un Certain Regard Best Actress award for The Shameless at the film festival, Payal Kapadia was awarded the Grand Prix award for her film, All We Imagine As Light. Several Bollywood stars took to social media to congratulate the filmmaker. Not only actors but also PM Narendra Modi and the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune also posted appreciation posts on social media.

However, actor Ali Fazal has taken to social media to slam the FTII for celebrating its alumnus Payal Kapadia’s historic Grand Prix win at the Cannes Film Festival. Scroll down to know why he’s calling them out.

Film & Television Institute of India, Pune congratulates Payal

Following Payal Kapadia’s Grand Prix win at Cannes 2024, FTII took to Instagram and shared an appreciation post. Sharing a couple of pictures from the film festival, the institute wrote, “It is a moment of pride for FTII as its Alumni create history at Cannes. As we witness a phenomenal year for Indian Cinema at 77th Cannes Film Festival, FTII cherishes the glorious achievements of its Alumni at this Mega International Stage of Cinema.” They added, “We congratulate Payal Kapadia for winning the Grand Prix Award, Santosh Sivan for receiving Pierre Angénieux Tribute Award, Maisam Ali for his debut at ACID & Chidanand S Naik for winning La Cinef. Their achievements are taking Indian Cinema to greater heights.”

Ali Fazal slams FTII for congratulating Payal Kapadia

Ali Fazal reposted FTII’s message with the caption, “Uhhh… please don’t. Just dont.” For those wondering why he did so, the FTII had taken disciplinary action against Payal in 2015 for leading a student protest against the appointment of actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as the institution’s president. Kapadia and other students argued that he didn’t have the credibility to head a premier institution like FTII.

Additionally, Pune Police filed a chargesheet against 35 students, including Payal, for holding then-FTII director Prashant Pathrabe captive in his office. This move resulted from Pathrabe’s decision to assess incomplete projects of students from the 2008 batch. The students were also denied scholarships. However, a couple of years later in 2017, the new FTII director Bhupendra Kainthola course-corrected, issued a letter of support, and covered the travel expenses of Payal as she travelled to the Cannes Film Festival for the screening of her short film Afternoon Clouds.

Heeramandi’s episodic director, Mitakshara Kumar also mentioned the disciplinary action taken against Payal on her Insta Stories. She wrote, “She responded to their noise with her work!”
