The 2025 Met Gala is set to kickstart at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan any minute now. While fashion enthusiast across the globe eagerly wait to see global celebrities walk the annual haute couture fundraising festival in jaw-dropping ensembles, do you know there are major dos and don’t at he event?
While the star-studded red carpet with avant-garde fashion statements is the highlight of the most fashionable night of the year, we bring you some of the strangest rules all attendees are expected to follow – but given what we’ve seen from the previous Galas, some rules have definitely been broken of this closed door affair that mostly sticks to its strict schedule.
Strict Rules Of The Met Gala
Food
Given the couture creations every celebs wears to the Met Gala, it’s not possible for them to enjoy a full-course meal but survive on lights snacks or Hors d’oeuvre. However, for those sitting down to enjoy the fundraiser dinner, do know the food will be void of garlic, onion and parsley. This is done in order to avoid a lingering onion breath or has herbs stuck in their teeth when they smile for pictures. Messy dishes too are avoided from the menu to prevent food spillages on their extravagant dresses. Kudos to Anna Wintour for making sure all her guests not only look good but and smell good too every time they speak.
No Photos/Selfies
While we have come across some bathroom selfies from the Met Gala dinner party, there’s a very strict ‘no phones’ policy in place at the event location. While the public is privy to the red carpet looks of celebrities walking the Met Gala carpet is all of their fashion glory, glimpses of the private tours they receive, their dinner and the performances they are entertained with are not filmed in full.
No Smoking
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is a museum (like duh!) and hence smoking is strickly prohibited in the premises. Once inside the venue, guests – irrespective of how powerful and stylish they may be, aren’t allowed to smoke. The main reason for this rule is to avoid damaged or have the curated collection of clothes on display smell of smoke post the dinner.
No Invite, No Entry
The Met Gala is a fundraiser held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and hence entry is NOT free for anyone. All the global A-list celebrities who decide to attend the most-awaited annual fashion event actually have to buy their seats if they aren’t extended an invite. According to a 2024 Times report, an individual will have to shell out $75,000 for a single ticket and a whopping $350,000 for an entire table. However, many celebs avoid paying for their seats as the fashion houses whose clothes they wear to the coveted event covers the cost of the seats.
Seating
It doesn’t mater if you pay a whopping $75,000 for a seat at the most anticipated fashion of the year, you cannot sit where you want or with whom you want. According to Ward Durrett, director of special projects at Vogue, a lot of planning and thought goes into deciding who sits where and next to whom at the Met Gala. As per reports, spouses too are never seated next to each other in order to encourage them to interact with other guests. Reportedly, the seating chart arrangements plans begin as early as December.
Met Gala 2025
The theme for this year’s gala – Tailored for You, coincides with the The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s 2025 exhibition – Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. This exhibit will highlight the rich history and cultural significance of Black Dandyism – with a focus on tailoring and the contributions of Black designers.
The 2025 Met Gala will see several Indian celebrities in attendance including actress and mother-to-be Kiara Advani, the King of Romance Shah Rukh Khan, global singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh as well as Met regulars Isha Ambani and Natasha Poonawalla.
