Adnan Sami On His Relation With Lata Mangeshkar
When shown a picture of him with Lata Mangeshkar and said it was the highest point of one’s career, Adnan Sami agreed to it. He said, “Oh, yes, it was. Again, apart from the fact that she was the Bharat Ratna. I mean, she was the Nightingale of India; she was the ultimate voice that graced the microphones and speakers of India. She was to be my father’s favourite singer. He (my father) grew up listening to her; he could sing her songs. Apart from a personal honour, it was something that made my father extraordinarily proud. When he was on his deathbed, he was suffering from pancreatic cancer. He was in Mumbai at that time, and I felt helpless because he was in the last stage. So I called up Lata didi, and she met my father many years back.”
Continuing, he said, “I told her he’s in this condition, and I would love for you to talk to him; it will cheer him up. I remember going up to him, and he was kind of semi-dozing. I went up to him and told him, ‘Baba, it’s Lata ji on call.’ I gave the phone to him, and suddenly his face lit up. He went on telling her that he had been listening to her songs since childhood. His favourite was ‘Dheere se aaja’, and she sang it to him over the call. Tears were coming out of his eyes, and he was at peace. That is where she stood for me. I had many messages from her.”
