EXCLUSIVE: ‘Manmohan Tiwari’ Rohitashv Gour Calls Shooting Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! Fun On The Run ‘More Challenging’ Than The Show; Confesses, “It’s Not Easy To Shift From Small Screen To Big”

Actor Rohitashv Gour is one of Indian television’s most loved actors and it’s mainly thanks to his perforamnce as Manmohan Tiwari in the long-running TV sitcom Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! In the show, Gour essayed the role of a simple undergarments businessman who constantly tries to impress his neighbor’s wife. While the show’s premiere on &TV in 2015, it was recently adapted as a feature film.

Ahead of the film’s – titled Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! Fun On The Run, release on ZEE5, the actor exclusively talks to Bollywood Bubble about reprising the small screen character on the big screen, staying relevant and the challenges he faced during the making of the film. Read on to know all he shared.

When you first heard about turning Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hai into a film, what was your honest reaction?

Actually, one day Mr. Shashank Bali and Mr. Sanjay Kohli came to the set and told us they were planning to make a film. At first, we thought they were joking or pulling a prank on us. But when they started narrating it seriously, we realized this was actually happening. They told us that Zee Entertainment and Zee Cinema wanted to make a film based on the show, and honestly, our jaws just dropped. Making a film out of a television show is a big thing. And as actors, everyone dreams of moving from the small screen to the big screen. So if that happens through a show you are already a part of, I would consider myself very lucky. That was my first reaction.

The show has built such a loyal following over the years. Did that familiarity make doing a film easier, or did it come with added responsibility?

It definitely comes with added responsibility. The audience has been watching the show for years, so they are very familiar with the characters and situations. That makes it more challenging because for a film—especially for the big screen—you have to present something different. What works on television does not always work the same way in a film, so all these things had to be kept in mind. It is not easy to shift from the small screen to the big screen when people already know and love the characters so much.

Your character is already so entertaining. Did you feel the need to take him up a notch for the big screen? What makes audiences still love him?

My character, Manmohan Tiwari, has been entertaining audiences for years. Naturally, I would want even more people to enjoy him on the big screen. But I did not feel the need to change or exaggerate the character; the audience already connects with him the way he is. I just hope people recognize him on the big screen and enjoy him the same way they always have. That familiarity and consistency are what make the character lovable.
