Manoj Bajpayee On Nervousness As An Actor
When asked if there was any nervousness before filming his character in Inspector Zende, Manoj Bajpayee said, “Dekhiye, nervousness is baat ki rehti hai ki jab aap pehli baar shooting karne jaate ho, toh har actor nervous rehta hai. Even the director bhi nervous rehta hai ki yaar, is role ka pehla pitch kaisa hoga? Hum usko jis tareeke se setup karna chahte hain, exactly will it fall in the right place or not? Woh saari nervousness hoti hai kyunki yeh ek puzzle hota hai. Jo hum workshops karte hain ya readings karte hain, characters ke baare mein baat karte hain – but exactly aapko tabhi pata chalta hai jab aap usko karke dekhte ho.”
He added, “Aur jab karna shuru karte ho, tab dots ko connect karna ek bahut bada kaam hota hai. So yes, it’s always a nervousness to really get the character in the first place, kyunki uske pehle sirf reading hui hai, baatcheet kiya hai. But I always feel that acting is more about doing it than talking about it. So when you actually perform, tab pata chalta hai ki bahut saari taiyaariyan jo aapne ki thi, unme se you have to throw off many parts of it. And many of the new things start adding up. That’s why we love this profession- kyunki there is so much unknown about it, and one loves exploring.”
Manoj Bajpayee On Playing Inspector Zende
Speaking about if he met the real-life Inspector Zende, the Gangs of Wasseypur actor said, “Nahin, inke (referring to the Director) saath kaafi baatcheet hoti thi meri. Bilkul jaahir si baat hai ki Zende sir ke saath yeh bahut mile the, likhne ke liye kaafi research kiya tha inhone. Aur jab maine script padhi thi, toh ek baat bahut clear thi, ki yeh ek humorous film banana chahte the.”
The actor concluded, “Par Zende sir ko exact follow karna yeh bhi nahin chahte the. Bilkul hi nahin chahte the ki main unse zyada milun. Kyunki uska reason yeh tha ki bahut saari liberties lena padta hai – jo inhone as a writer liya, aur maine as an actor liya. Is film ki zarurat yeh thi ki hum ekdum imitate karne ke bajaye isko khud se form karein aur perform karein.”
Watch Inspector Zende beginning September 5 on Netflix.
