Nushrratt Bharuccha On Arranged Marriage
In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Nushrratt Bharuccha talks about rejecting arranged marriage suitors because she was asked to quit acting. Says, “I’ve actually gone for an arranged marriage meeting without even seeing the boy’s photo. I mean, I just hope they’re normal—or at least pretending to be! But we sit, we have a good meal, and my only condition is: take me somewhere with cuisine I like. Even if I don’t like you, at least let the food be interesting.”
She added, What I appreciate about arranged marriage is the clarity—it’s like, this is what we’re looking for. Even girls go in prepared. But yaar, so many people have told me, ‘After marriage, you’ll have to leave acting and films,’ and I just smile. I’m like, “Dekho yaar, that’s not happening.
She continued, Honestly, if there’s a problem at your place and you want to respect your family and their wishes, it’s fine. Have the meal, go home, no pressure. That’s what I told them. I said, ‘If it comes down to it, I’ll find the boy. It’s not a big deal.’
She further said, So I was telling my father, ‘Papa, let’s say I get married—would you rather have me come to you after two years saying I want a divorce, or would you prefer I tell you now that I haven’t found the person I want to spend my life with?’
She added, People get into marriages, and sometimes things don’t work out. You won’t find a perfect person—my aunty used to say since childhood, ‘All five fingers aren’t the same, beta. Some will be more, some less.’ You have to adjust, to make peace with the person you choose and find a way to live.
Nushratt Bharuccha On Today’s Problems With Marriage
When asked about modern day relationship Nushrratt says, “The problem nowadays is that people don’t want to invest time or effort into a relationship. They want to walk out early. It’s become a joke. But that doesn’t mean you should stay in a bad marriage. Never put up with abuse.”
She added,“All I told my father was, until I feel that love and connection with someone—someone for whom I’m willing to adjust, to reshape myself to fit into their world and make that relationship work—until then, I won’t marry.”
She continued, “If I choose someone, I’ll make sure he’s happy, his family is happy. I’m the kind of person who will go all in. I’d do it for someone else’s family because I chose that relationship. And that’s why I say: when I make a commitment, I see it through—because it’s my choice. Otherwise, I won’t even enter into a relationship. It’s just not possible.”
She concluded, “Because for me, acting isn’t just a job. It might be for some people—but not for me. It’s like breathing. It’s air. If you take that away from me—if I can’t act, can’t express emotions on set, can’t become a character—I won’t have air in my lungs. And if I’m not happy, how can I keep someone else happy?”
